In part 4 of our series of videos covering the steps in a single case of PVR-associated RD repair, we cover retinectomy basics. Here, we use PFL to flatten the retina and inspect the retinal periphery. In this case, the vitreous base appears thickened and the retina appears to be contracted, so an inferior retinectomy is created. We discuss decision-making regarding the location and extent of the retinecomy, the use of diathermy to demarcate the retinectomy edge, positioning of the cutter to remove retina anterior to the retinectomy edge, how to avoid iatrogenic trauma to the choroid, and the application of laser retinopexy.
