When a vitrectomy needs to be performed in a patient with severe corneal opacification, the use of a temporary keratoprosthesis can facilitate a view for posterior segment surgery. For this case we welcome two guest surgeons: Dr. Ramesh Ayyala, an expert anterior segment surgeon and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida, and Dr. Ramak Roohipourmoallai, an expert vitreoretinal surgeon and Assistant Professor also at the University of South Florida. Their patient sustained bilateral blunt traumatic globe injury resulting in loss of the right eye and severe damage to the left eye. The patient developed glaucoma requiring tube shunt implantation however the tube became infected and was removed abroad. The patient presents now with an opaque cornea and an open funnel retinal detachment. Let’s see how Drs. Ayyala and Roohi tackle this complex case and we want to thank both of them for sharing it with us!
