When performing a vitrectomy for retinal detachment repair, there are a number of options to drain subretinal fluid in order to apply laser around the retinal break. These options include creation of a drainage retinotomy, the use of perfluorocarbon liquid to steamroll the retina flat and draining directly through the retinal break while performing an air-fluid exchange. This last technique is demonstrated in this surgical video and at the end of the case we discuss some of the pros and cons of this approach.
