81. All the Tools in the Toolbox

It’s very important for fellows during training to get hands on experience with a variety of vitreoretinal techniques and instruments.  Continuing our week of cases from UCLA vitreoretinal surgical fellows, 1st year fellow Dr. Itzam Marin will show you multiple strategies to tackle a complex diabetic tractional retinal detachment including the use of forceps, chandelier illumination, bimanual technique, a lighted pick and an illuminated endolaser probe.

While you won’t use these techniques and instruments all the time, you never know when they might be useful.  Also being comfortable with adding tools to your toolbox itself is an important skill.  Vitreoretinal surgery is constantly evolving and being comfortable to adapt, to add new skills and to utilize new instruments or technologies is an important part of being a cutting edge surgeon.  Thank you Dr. Marin for sharing this case!
